A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for robbing a teenager of an e-bike and e-scooter worth a combined £2,200 at Stratford Overground station in East London. Jay Archibald, of Loampit Vale in Lewisham, approached his 17-year-old victim on the platform on June 28 last year, grabbed the bike's handlebars, and demanded the items, threatening to hurt the teen if he refused or called police.
Brazen robbery on station platform
Archibald first asked the victim how many volts the e-bike had and where he was from, before declaring, "This bike is mine now." The terrified teenager handed over both the £1,500 e-bike and the £700 e-scooter, after which Archibald boarded a Jubilee Line train with the stolen property. The victim did not call police immediately due to the threat of violence.
The breakthrough came on July 2, when a friend of the victim spotted the stolen e-bike advertised for sale on social media. The victim identified both the bike and Archibald from the listing, leading to his arrest on November 29, 2024. Archibald later pleaded guilty to robbery at Southwark Crown Court and was sentenced on July 21, 2026, with an additional £228 victim surcharge ordered.
Police praise victim's bravery
Detective Constable Olesia Berdova of British Transport Police said: "I am very pleased with the outcome of this investigation. Archibald preyed upon a teenager travelling alone, believing he would be an easy target. As a result of the court's sentence, he will now spend much of the next four years in prison."
Berdova added: "The incident had a massive impact on the victim and his sense of safety and security when travelling on the railway network. Thanks to his bravery and support, we have been able to bring Archibald to justice, and I hope that the lengthy prison sentence handed down provides some measure of peace and closure for the victim and his family."
Appeal for witnesses
BTP is urging anyone who has been a victim of robbery on the railway or witnessed such a crime to report it by texting 61016. "There is absolutely no place for robbery on the railway network," Berdova said. "We'll do everything in our power to secure justice for you."
The case highlights the vulnerability of young travellers and the importance of reporting crimes, even when threats are made. The victim's cooperation was instrumental in securing the conviction, and the sentence sends a clear message that such offences will be dealt with severely.
