Nicky Butt has expressed caution over Manchester United's potential move for Crysencio Summerville, warning that the Dutch winger may lack the consistency needed to thrive at Old Trafford. With Champions League football returning next season, United manager Michael Carrick is prioritizing midfield reinforcements, having already signed Ederson from Atalanta. However, the departure of Casemiro and the likely exit of Manuel Ugarte leave gaps to fill.
Midfield Targets and Summerville's Emergence
United have been linked with Aurelien Tchouameni, Elliot Anderson, and West Ham's Matheus Fernandes, but Summerville has also emerged as a surprise target. The 24-year-old winger recorded seven goals and five assists in 34 league games last season and impressed at the World Cup, scoring in the Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Japan. Reports suggest a £50 million fee, which could vary depending on West Ham's potential relegation and Summerville's tournament form.
Butt's Assessment
Speaking exclusively to Paddy Power, the United legend acknowledged Summerville's explosiveness but questioned his consistency. 'He's an explosive player, good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough,' Butt said. 'However, the money shouldn't be a lot, and United need to build a squad. It can't always be about superstar signings. Summerville was brilliant for the Netherlands in the first game, so he could start every week for United, but he must get more consistent to reach the next level.'
Butt emphasized the importance of squad depth, recalling United's defeat to Leeds last season. 'When they played Leeds at Old Trafford and lost, the bench wasn't good enough. When everyone's fit, they're strong, but they still need to build the squad. I'd definitely look at signing a player like Summerville.'
United's Left-Flank Options
United lack depth on the left flank, where Summerville primarily operates. Carrick's current options include Matheus Cunha, a natural striker, and Patrick Dorgu, a converted left-back. The Red Devils begin their 2026/27 Premier League season with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City on August 22.
