Nicky Butt has tipped James Garner for a potential return to Manchester United, following the midfielder's outstanding performances for Everton this season. The former United academy graduate has flourished at Goodison Park, earning his first England call-up and putting himself in contention for a surprise World Cup spot.
Garner's Rise at Everton
Garner, 25, joined Everton for £15 million in 2022 after coming through United's academy and spending time on loan at Watford and Nottingham Forest. This season, he has become a key figure under David Moyes, registering eight goal contributions and helping the Toffees push for European qualification. His club form earned him a first England call-up in March, featuring against Uruguay and Japan, raising the possibility of a place in the final 26-man World Cup squad, which must be announced by May 30.
Butt's Verdict on a United Return
Butt, who oversaw Garner's development in United's academy, believes a return to Old Trafford is plausible, though perhaps not immediately. 'I don't see why he couldn't be back at United,' Butt told Paddy Power. 'He's performing well, he's playing for a big club with a big expectation. He plays under pressure every week, he knows Man United, and he's doing amazingly well now. It's a bit soon to go and pay big money for him now, but I'm confident he can go and do it.'
United have made midfield a priority this summer after confirming Casemiro's departure at the end of the season. Butt added: 'At the time Jimmy wasn't at the level to burst into United and play regularly. It wasn't working so he moved on and kick-started his career. Jimmy is a bit like the player I was. Not the most talented but his drive and desire to get to the top is up there with anybody I've seen.'
World Cup Prospects
Butt is confident Garner will be on the plane to North America this summer, where England will aim for their first men's trophy since 1966. 'Jimmy Garner has done himself a massive favour. He's been phenomenal this season. He's got it all, he can pass through the lines, he can defend, he can tackle, he can sprint. He's like a poorer man's version of Gerrard. Not as good as Gerrard, but he's in that mould. He will definitely be going after that, he's got his ticket on the plane.'
