Bournemouth are facing a race against time to complete upgrades to the Vitality Stadium so it can stage European football for the first time next season. The club secured a provisional stadium licence from Uefa after officials visited in April to review redevelopment plans, but improvements are needed due to the limited size of hospitality areas and broadcasting facilities.
Uefa Inspection Set for Next Month
A Uefa stadium inspection and commercial operations team will visit next month, following Bournemouth's historic European qualification secured by a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Tuesday. Club sources confirmed the intention to use the Vitality Stadium for European fixtures next season.
Expansion Plans Submitted
Bournemouth have submitted plans for a phased expansion that would almost double the current capacity of 11,286 to over 20,000. The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council planning committee is due to discuss the proposal on Friday, focusing on the demolition and replacement of the South Stand. The meeting was originally scheduled for 11 May, raising concerns about further delays.
While Bournemouth do not need to increase capacity to meet Uefa requirements—Bodø/Glimt played in the Champions League this season with an 8,000-seat stadium—infrastructure improvements are necessary to achieve a Uefa category rating. Planned work this summer includes creating a permanent outside broadcast compound, installing new perimeter fencing and turnstiles, and resurfacing the pitch.
The club has scaled back some building work. Originally, they intended to add about 1,500 seats before next season by filling gaps in all four corners, but that figure has been reduced to 800 seats, with only the north-west and south-east corners to be completed.
European Qualification Scenarios
Bournemouth are guaranteed at least a Europa League place, but they could also qualify for the Champions League. If Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg and finish fifth in the Premier League, the sixth-placed team would enter the Champions League. Bournemouth will secure sixth if they avoid defeat at Nottingham Forest or if Brighton fail to beat Manchester United. They could also finish fifth on goal difference if they win and Liverpool lose at home to Brentford, though Liverpool's goal difference is superior by six.
The Premier League's Champions League and Europa League qualifiers will enter the league stage next season, giving Bournemouth additional time to complete the necessary work.
