Bayern Munich Enter Race for Newcastle United Star Anthony Gordon
German giants Bayern Munich have reportedly initiated discussions regarding a potential summer move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to sources in Germany. The 25-year-old England international has emerged as a primary transfer target for the Bundesliga powerhouse, with contact already established with his representatives.
Gordon's Stellar Season Attracts European Attention
Anthony Gordon is currently enjoying the most prolific goal-scoring campaign of his professional career, particularly shining in the UEFA Champions League. The talented forward has netted an impressive 10 goals in just 12 European appearances this season, contributing to a total of 17 goals across 45 matches in all competitions.
Despite Newcastle United's challenging Premier League campaign, Gordon's individual performances have kept his market value exceptionally high. The winger appears destined to represent England at the upcoming World Cup this summer, further enhancing his appeal to top European clubs.
Premier League Competition and Bayern's Ambitions
Several Premier League heavyweights have expressed interest in Gordon in recent months, including Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea. However, Bayern Munich have now entered the competition, aiming to lure the English star to Bavaria.
Reports from Sky Sport Germany indicate that Bayern view Gordon as ideal competition for Luis Diaz on the left wing. The German club reportedly believes they can secure the Newcastle star for approximately €60 million (£52 million), though this valuation appears ambitious considering Newcastle paid £45 million for Gordon in January 2023.
Contract Situation and Valuation Concerns
Anthony Gordon remains under contract at St James' Park until 2030, providing Newcastle United with significant leverage in any potential negotiations. The club faces no immediate pressure to sell one of their key assets below market value.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has suggested that interested parties would need to offer substantially more than Bayern's reported valuation. 'If you're talking about an England international forward who's got a really good chance of starting for England, then you'd have to probably get over £100 million to have a chance of signing Gordon,' Shearer told Betfair.
Gordon's Perspective on Transfer Speculation
The player himself addressed transfer rumors in February, dismissing links with various clubs as 'a load of rubbish.' Speaking to Chronicle Live, Gordon stated: 'I haven't heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you [the media].'
When questioned about his commitment to Newcastle United, the former Everton winger emphasized his focus: 'Of course. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish. I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now.'
Gordon added: 'You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me, I have done that and I am not going to do that now.'
