Premier League leaders Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with German giants Borussia Dortmund over a potential January move for their highly-rated teenage defender, Roméo Ritter.
Gunners Make Enquiry for Defensive Prodigy
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the North London club have made direct contact with Dortmund to sound out the possibility of a deal for the 17-year-old centre-back. The Gunners are looking to future-proof their defensive options, identifying Ritter as a star for the next decade.
The young defender, who turns 18 in March, is yet to make his senior professional debut. However, his exceptional performances for Dortmund's Under-19 and Under-17 sides, as well as in the UEFA Youth League, have put Europe's elite clubs on alert.
AC Milan Also in the Race for Ritter
Arsenal are not alone in their pursuit. AC Milan have also made a phone enquiry for the player, setting up a potential transfer tussle. Plettenberg states that Ritter's future in Germany is now uncertain following these approaches.
"AC Milan and Arsenal have made phone enquiries about Roméo Ritter and are monitoring his situation," Plettenberg explained on X. "The 17 y/o talented left-footed centre-back is dreaming of making his breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund. He is under contract until 2027. However, it is still unclear whether he will extend his deal or not."
Why Arsenal Want the Dortmund Teenager
Despite boasting one of the Premier League's strongest defences, featuring the established partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel, Arsenal's hierarchy is planning for the long term. Ritter is seen as a perfect developmental prospect.
The left-footed defender is renowned for his composure on the ball and versatility, capable of playing on either side of central defence or even as a left-back. According to data from Transfermarkt, he has already made 22 appearances at Under-17 level and a further 14 for Dortmund's Under-19s this season.
Dortmund have a famed history of developing world-class talent through their academy, with the likes of Marco Reus, Mario Götze, and Christian Pulisic among their alumni. Ritter is now the latest prospect tipped to follow that prestigious path, whether at Signal Iduna Park or elsewhere.
With the January transfer window open, Arsenal's move for Ritter signals their intent to build on their position at the summit of English football by securing the best young talents available.
