Toyota has reclaimed its crown at the Le Mans 24 Hours, reigniting its love affair with the iconic race. The No. 7 Toyota TR010, driven by Britain’s Mike Conway, Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi, and Dutch driver Nyck de Vries, crossed the finish line 11 seconds ahead of the chasing BMW after 381 laps. This victory marked a first for De Vries and a second for Conway and Kobayashi, with Kobayashi visibly emotional in the cockpit.
A Race of Relentless Pace
The 94th edition of the endurance classic was held in baking sunshine with no rain, demanding unwavering focus from drivers and teams. The top three cars were separated by just seven seconds after 20 hours, highlighting the intense competition. Modern engineering reliability means the race is now a flat-out sprint, leaving no room for error.
More than 350,000 fans attended, including an estimated 120,000 from the UK, packing the 8.47-mile Circuit de la Sarthe. While some lament the event’s growing corporate nature, it has adapted to attract a younger audience, boosting its popularity year after year.
Class Victories and Personal Triumphs
The GT3 category was won by the TF Sport Corvette, driven by Britain’s Jonny Edgar, Dutch driver Nicky Catsburg, and American amateur Ben Keating. Keating, who underwent elbow surgery just nine weeks earlier after a bike accident, described it as "the most competitive race I have ever seen." Despite visible stitches, he raced to victory, embodying the spirit of Le Mans.
Future of Endurance Racing
The World Endurance Championship (WEC) is enjoying a renaissance, with nine rounds planned for next year, including a return to Silverstone in April. McLaren will join the Hypercar class in 2027 for the first time since 1998, aiming to replicate its 1995 Le Mans win. CEO Zak Brown attended this year’s race instead of the Barcelona GP, signaling the brand’s commitment. Ford will also enter the Hypercar ranks in 2027, seeking its first outright win since 1969.
These additions will join Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Peugeot, Toyota, and Genesis in the top class, a lineup that seemed improbable a decade ago. As the sun set on another glorious Le Mans, fans eagerly await 2027.
