The 2026 Tour de France continued with Stage 12, a challenging route through the Alps. The stage featured a breakaway victory, with the peloton unable to catch the leaders on the final climb.
Stage 12 Route and Key Moments
The 165-kilometer stage from Gap to Briançon included two category 1 climbs and a summit finish. Early on, a group of 10 riders broke away, building a lead of over five minutes.
As the race approached the final climb, the Col d'Izoard, the breakaway group split, with three riders pushing ahead. The peloton, led by the yellow jersey team, struggled to close the gap.
Winner and General Classification
French rider Pierre Rolland attacked on the descent and soloed to victory, his first stage win in the Tour since 2012. He crossed the line 45 seconds ahead of the chasing group.
In the general classification, Tadej Pogačar retained the yellow jersey after finishing sixth on the stage. His main rival Jonas Vingegaard lost 12 seconds but remains second overall.
According to race director Christian Prudhomme, “Stage 12 was a classic Alpine stage that rewarded aggression and tactical nous. Rolland’s victory is a testament to his experience.”
Impact on the Race
The stage reshuffled the standings for the mountains classification, with Rolland taking the polka dot jersey. The time gaps between GC contenders remain tight, setting up a dramatic final week.
