FIFA Bans England Fan's Flag Over Submarine Image at World Cup
FIFA Bans England Fan's Flag Over Submarine Image

FIFA has banned an England fan's flag from the 2026 World Cup due to an image of a submarine, a decision described as 'ridiculous' by supporters. The Three Lions began their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas, but fans from Barrow face a setback ahead of the match against Ghana.

Flag Rejected Over Submarine Imagery

The flag, featuring the name and badge of Barrow A.F.C. alongside a submarine silhouette honoring the town's shipbuilding heritage, was rejected by FIFA. The governing body stated: 'The application was rejected because the item includes imagery of weapons or military (submarine). These are not permitted under FIFA policy.' Fans were told the flag could be approved if the submarine image is covered up.

Fan Reaction

John Little, a Barrow supporter, expressed disbelief: 'I couldn't believe it really, it's a little bit harsh. I could understand guns and knives, but not a submarine. It's not like you can go down to Walmart and buy one.' The group plans to cover the image and resubmit the flag.

Wider Flag Restrictions

This is not the only flag-related issue at the World Cup. FIFA also banned Iran supporters from bringing pre-revolutionary flags, citing political symbolism. Additionally, flags cannot be draped over LED advertising boards, a rule enforced during the Croatia match.

FIFA cited 'safety and security reasons' for the restrictions, allowing small flags made of fire-resistant material without prior approval. Larger flags require pre-approval.

England faces Ghana in Boston on Tuesday at 9pm UK time for their second Group L match.
