A crash brought Sophie Lewis' City of London Nocturne campaign to an abrupt end, but the 23-year-old hopes her bad luck is now behind her. The cyclist was well-placed in the race, which returned after an eight-year absence, before a collision forced her out.
Summer Plans Ahead
Lewis has a big summer planned, including representing England at the Commonwealth Games. She hopes she has used up all her bad luck in London. "I was really enjoying it until I got wiped out," she said. "It was frustrating, because I was feeling good and riding well, and it was out of my control."
"Aside from that, the atmosphere was fantastic and the course was brilliant. I was really enjoying the race up until that point. It's a shame, especially heading into the summer when you want to build momentum, but overall things have been going well, so I'm hoping I can turn it around quickly."
"It's a big summer ahead for me. It feels like an important period, and I'm in a good place, so it's about taking those opportunities now. I'm really looking forward to the Commonwealth Games, it should be a fantastic experience. Hopefully my luck turns as well after today, but I'm excited for what's coming up."
Star-Studded Field
The Commonwealth bronze medallist was part of a star-studded field for the women's elite race, which also included British National Circuit Race champion Kate Richardson and individual pursuit world record holder Josie Knight. Richardson was pipped on the line by 20-year-old Nina Lavenu in an absorbing sprint finish, as thousands watched on.
Future of the Event
Lewis hopes the strong reception for Nocturne's return will ensure it keeps coming back year after year. "It's been a fantastic event, and I've really enjoyed being part of it," said Lewis, who also took part in the charity pro-am in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. "It's great to see it back on the calendar. I love racing in city-centre events like this, especially in London, it's close to my heart as I grew up just north of the city. Having friends and family out on the course made it even more special."
"Racing here reminds me of when I used to watch this event and think how cool it was, and now I'm part of it myself, which is pretty special. It shows that there's demand for events like this and that it's possible to put them on, even though they're difficult to organise. Hopefully it encourages more of them in the future."
