Cuckmere Haven, a pebble beach on the Sussex coast, has been named the best beach near London for summer 2026, according to Time Out's annual ranking of the top 40 UK beaches. It placed second overall, the highest of five beaches within a short train journey from the capital.
Film-Worthy Scenery and Hiking Access
The beach is flanked by the towering white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters on one side and Seaford Head Nature Reserve on the other. It has served as a backdrop for films including Atonement, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Time Out travel writer Liv Kelly said, 'Few [coasts] have such dramatic and iconic backdrops as Cuckmere Haven.' The beach remains relatively untouched despite being a popular stop for walkers on the Seven Sisters coastal trail, one of the best hikes near London.
Travel and Amenities
Visitors can reach Cuckmere Haven from London by train from Clapham Junction to Seaford (changing at Lewes) in under two hours, followed by a 5km walk to the beach. Driving takes approximately two hours and 20 minutes. Liv Kelly recommends a pit stop at the Cuckmere Inn near Exceat Bridge, a short climb from the shore.
With scorching summer temperatures forecast, the beach offers a peaceful setting for a full day of bathing or a break during the Seven Sisters hike. Time Out's full list of 40 best UK beaches includes other nearby options for Londoners seeking a seaside escape.
