Felony Charges Filed After Paddle Attack
A 63-year-old man faces two counts of felony battery on a person aged 65 or older, while his 51-year-old wife has been charged with a single count of the same offense. The charges stem from an arrest affidavit detailing the violent confrontation that occurred in Port Orange.
The altercation began during a pickleball match between two married couples. The dispute centered on shots made in the area known as the kitchen, a marked zone on either side of the net. By official rules, players are only permitted to take a shot in this area after the ball has landed there; otherwise, they must avoid it entirely.
From Insults to Physical Violence
What started as a verbal argument quickly escalated. Players exchanged insults, and at the conclusion of the match, the 63-year-old man reportedly directed an insult toward his male opponent's wife. This provocation led to a heated exchange of words between the two men.
According to the affidavit, the situation turned physical when the 63-year-old man launched an attack on his opponent. He allegedly struck his opponent in the face with a pickleball paddle and continued to punch him while he was on the ground. His wife then joined the fray, contributing to the violence.
