Arthur Fery: A 'hard-working inspiration' at Wimbledon

Arthur Fery, the British Wimbledon hopeful who entered the competition as a wildcard, has been praised by his former teacher as a true "inspiration" to current pupils. Fery, 23, is currently competing in his quarter-final match against Italy's Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court, making him Britain's last player standing in the Men's Singles competition.

Background and Education

Although born in Sevres, France, Fery grew up just 10 minutes from the All England Lawn Tennis Club and attended King's College School in Wimbledon until 2020. He was heavily involved in sports during his time at the school, according to Ben James, head of tennis at King's College School.

James, who taught Fery and his siblings, said: "Those of us who taught Arthur remember him as well-mannered, polite and humble. He excelled as a sportsman and was incredibly hard-working. He is an inspiration to our current pupils as they look to the world beyond school. Everyone at King's wishes him the very best of luck."

Family and Early Career

Fery's parents are both French and well-known in the sports world. His mother, Olivia, is a former tennis player who also worked for the LTA, and his father, Loic, is the chairman and former owner of top-flight football club Lorient. Fery briefly played for France as a junior but came through the British system before choosing to delay his entry to the professional game and study at Stanford University in California.

Wimbledon Run

Entering the tournament ranked 114th in the world, Fery is only the second British wild card to reach the last 16 at a grand slam, following Andrew Foster in 1993. His quarter-final match against Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Fery's impressive run has defied expectations, and his former teacher's words highlight the hard work and determination that have brought him this far.
