Erith Post Office could relocate to a new location as part of plans being finalised by the branch's operator, with any move not expected until next year. The Post Office confirmed proposals are being developed to move from the current site in Erith High Street, while the existing branch remains open as usual during discussions.
Residential Development Approved
The potential relocation follows Bexley Council's Planning Committee approval of BexleyCo's plans to demolish the current Post Office building at the corner of Erith High Street and Bexley Road. The development will replace it with a part three, part six-storey block containing 33 flats.
The scheme includes one one-bedroom flat, 24 two-bedroom flats and eight three-bedroom flats, while retaining and incorporating the building's locally listed 1933 brick façade into the new development.
Operator Seeks Modern Premises
A Post Office spokesperson said the operator was seeking to secure the long-term future of the service through a move to more modern premises. Further details of the proposal are expected to be shared once arrangements have been finalised.
“All Post Offices are run by operators. It is important that operators make the very best use of their resources to ensure future sustainability of both their business and the Post Office service,” the spokesperson said. “Our partner has identified an opportunity to move this branch into modern premises whilst continuing to offer Post Office services and retail alongside.”
Impact on Local Services
The relocation aims to maintain Post Office services in Erith while accommodating the new residential development. The existing branch remains operational, and the move is slated for next year, pending finalisation of the plans.
