St John's Wood: The Celebrity 'Hidden Gem' of North London
London's Celebrity 'Hidden Gem' Neighbourhood

An exclusive North London suburb, celebrated for its famous residents and luxurious properties, is being hailed as the capital's 'hidden gem' by estate agents, even as it prepares to welcome another rock and roll legend.

A Celebrity Homecoming

According to a source speaking to the London Evening Standard, Liam Gallagher, the iconic frontman of Oasis, is rumoured to have purchased a Grade-II listed mansion in St John's Wood. This move marks a homecoming for the musician, as both he and his brother Noel have historic connections to the area.

Noel Gallagher famously bought a well-known townhouse in nearby Belsize Park back in 1997, a property nicknamed 'Supernova Heights', which helped cement the neighbourhood's status as a magnet for music industry elites.

They are far from alone. The area has long attracted a distinguished and eclectic list of residents from the entertainment world. Sir Paul McCartney has called the suburb home since the 1960s, living close to the legendary Abbey Road Studios. More recently, pop superstar Rihanna was a notable tenant, reportedly renting an eight-bedroom mansion for a staggering £18,000 per week between 2018 and 2020. That same property later sold for £27.5 million, underscoring the premium nature of the locale.

The suburb's appeal also extends to acting talent. Award-winning actor Damian Lewis, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, grew up in St John's Wood before finding fame in Hollywood.

More Than Just Famous Faces

Beyond its star-studded roster of residents, St John's Wood offers a wealth of cultural and recreational attractions. Luxury estate agent Beauchamp Estates describes it as a 'hidden gem', noting that while it is one of London's most exclusive neighbourhoods, it remains relatively unknown compared to its famous neighbours, retaining a certain mystique.

The area is globally recognised for the Abbey Road Studios and its iconic zebra crossing, immortalised by The Beatles. Tourists flock here to recreate the famous album cover walk.

Sports enthusiasts know it as the home of Lord's Cricket Ground, a historic venue offering tours and events. For outdoor relaxation, Primrose Hill is nearby with spectacular skyline views, while St John's Wood itself offers tranquil green spaces and is adjacent to the vast Regent's Park, home to London Zoo and boating lakes.

The high street features a charming mix of boutique stores, high-end fashion outlets, artisanal delis, and speciality shops, complemented by cosy cafés and bakeries perfect for a leisurely brunch.

Property Market Snapshot

Unsurprisingly, given its prestige and celebrity appeal, property prices in St John's Wood sit at the upper end of the scale. Data from Rightmove shows that average property prices in the area over the last year stood at £1,671,143, significantly higher than the London average of £661,329.

The majority of sales were flats, which sold for an average of £919,374. Terraced properties commanded an average of £2,545,458, while detached homes fetched a remarkable £11,932,812.

However, the market is experiencing a shift. Along with other luxury spots in the capital, house prices in St John's Wood are decreasing. The current average is 6% down on the previous year and a significant 14% down on the 2022 peak of £1,933,878.
