Forest Hill Crowned Among London's Best Places to Live
Forest Hill Named One of London's Top Living Spots

The leafy South London neighbourhood of Forest Hill has been officially recognised as one of the capital's premier residential destinations, earning a coveted position in The Times' prestigious 'Best Places to Live' list for 2024. This charming SE23 locale has been celebrated for its thriving independent retail scene, strong community bonds and exceptional appeal to families and first-time buyers alike.

From Overlooked to Outstanding

When many people think of Lewisham, they might envision bustling commuter hubs, modern apartment complexes and trendy bars rather than verdant green spaces and quaint village atmospheres. Forest Hill has successfully challenged these preconceptions through significant regeneration efforts that have transformed its fortunes over the past decade.

The neighbourhood's remarkable turnaround is particularly evident along Dartmouth Road, which has evolved from having numerous vacant units ten years ago to becoming one of Forest Hill's most vibrant thoroughfares today. This transformation has been significantly boosted by the introduction of the Overground service in 2010, which dramatically improved connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors.

A Community That Captures Hearts

Local feedback about Forest Hill has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing genuine affection for their neighbourhood. One particularly telling example comes from Anna Kokornacka, owner of the zero waste shop Beetroot and Beans on Dartmouth Road, who has been so enamoured with the area that she has permanently tattooed 'FH' on her arm.

"Forest Hill is the best community I've ever lived in," Kokornacka revealed. "I came here in 2001 from Poland, lived here for three weeks and then moved to Tooting. I came back here 10 years ago and I don't know if I'll ever leave."

She continued: "I live here, I have my business here and my family here, and my heart is here. There's such a community feel, local people try and do their best to support local people, that's the main thing I've found in Forest Hill. You can really see that so many of these small shops and local businesses, it's really close-knit, you feel like you belong somewhere. That's what I love the most."

Independent Spirit and Female Entrepreneurship

Forest Hill's commercial landscape is distinguished by its remarkable concentration of independent businesses, including traditional pubs, cosy cafes, diverse eateries and even a classic DVD store that has managed to thrive in the digital age. What makes this retail ecosystem particularly noteworthy is the significant presence of female entrepreneurs.

"Funnily enough most of the independent businesses along this road are owned by women," Kokornacka observed, "so that's the power of women on show here which is great as well." This distinctive characteristic adds another layer to Forest Hill's unique community identity and contributes to its growing reputation as a supportive environment for small business owners.

Recognition Among London's Elite

While Forest Hill didn't claim the top position in The Times' rankings—that honour went to Clerkenwell—its inclusion alongside other desirable London neighbourhoods represents significant recognition. The publication specifically highlighted how Forest Hill has become a magnet for first-time property buyers and young families seeking both character and community.

Other areas featured on the prestigious list included the previous year's winner Crouch End, along with Highams Park, Little Venice, London Fields and Wimbledon Village. Forest Hill's inclusion demonstrates how South London neighbourhoods are increasingly competing with more traditionally fashionable areas for recognition as desirable residential destinations.

The combination of excellent transport links via the Overground, a thriving independent retail scene, strong community networks and appealing green spaces has positioned Forest Hill as a compelling alternative for Londoners seeking character and connectivity without the premium prices of more central locations.
