The auction will be held at Wilsons Auctions in Newcastle at 11am on March 4, 2026. The buses are currently located at TfL's West Ham Depot and will be available for viewing by appointment only from February 18 to 20, between 11am and 3pm. All five buses are in full working order, having been maintained to operational standards.

Each bus is anticipated to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000 or more, reflecting their historical significance and condition. Nigel Binks, associate director UK Sales at Wilsons Auctions, commented on the sale, highlighting the uniqueness of this opportunity.

Binks stated: "These are instantly recognisable, unmistakably British, and a lasting symbol of the city's heritage. Interested bidders will be pleased to hear that all five buses are running. We are honoured to be working with Transport For London on this auction. It's a privilege to offer buyers a rare opportunity to secure pieces of genuine history."

Legacy of the Routemaster in London Transport

Constructed by the Associated Equipment Company, the Routemaster buses were purpose-built for London's transport system. They operated extensively throughout the capital from the 1960s until most were phased out of regular service in the early 2000s. A handful continued on heritage routes, catering to tourists and enthusiasts, but this auction marks the final disposal of TfL's remaining stock from that era.

The sale represents a significant moment for transport memorabilia collectors and history buffs, as these buses embody a bygone era of London life. Their distinctive design and cultural impact make them highly sought-after items in the auction world.
