Johnny Marr Auction: Iconic Smiths Guitars at Christie's

Johnny Marr, the legendary guitarist of The Smiths, has announced he will auction 10 of his most iconic guitars at Christie's London in September 2026. The collection includes the Rickenbacker 330 used to record the classic riff for 'This Charming Man', expected to fetch up to £300,000. Proceeds from the sale will benefit youth music charities, including the Music Venue Trust and the BRIT School.

Guitars Span the Smiths' Career

The auction features instruments from every Smiths album, from the Fender Telecaster used on the debut album to the Gibson Les Paul played on 'Strangeways, Here We Come'. Each guitar comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Marr. According to Christie's, the collection represents a 'unique snapshot of British music history'.

Charity Focus and Personal Significance

Marr stated, 'These guitars have been part of my life for decades, but it's time for them to inspire a new generation. I'm delighted that the proceeds will support young musicians.' The auction is expected to raise over £1 million, with a portion going to the charity Youth Music.
