Three prison officers were targeted in a violent stabbing incident at HMP Isle of Wight, with two requiring hospital treatment for their injuries.
Details of the Violent Assault
The attack occurred on Thursday within the prison's inpatient unit. An inmate allegedly used an improvised weapon to stab the officers.
One of the victims, a 32-year-old officer, sustained significant injuries to his face. A second officer, aged 28, was stabbed in his right arm. A third prison guard was also wounded during the altercation.
Aftermath and Official Response
Following the assault, the suspected prisoner was moved to the facility's segregation and facilitation unit. Hampshire Constabulary has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the serious assault, though no arrests have been made as the incident occurred inside the prison.
Fortunately, both hospitalised prison workers have since been discharged from medical care.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice issued a strong statement, saying: 'Attacks on our staff are cowardly and unacceptable which is why we push for the strongest possible punishments.'
A Broader Context of Rising Violence
This incident is not isolated. A recent report reveals that assaults on prison staff across the UK have reached record levels.
Official Ministry of Justice figures indicate an estimated 10,477 assaults on staff were reported in the year up to June 2025.
Furthermore, the same data set showed a troubling 30% increase in deaths in custody for the year up to September 2025, bringing the total to 411. Nearly a quarter of these incidents were self-inflicted.
HMP Isle of Wight, the scene of this latest attack, is a major facility housing more than 1,000 prisoners across two sites on the island.
