Teacher Accused of Murdering Adopted Baby After Months of Sexual Abuse

A baby boy was "routinely ill-treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted" before he was killed by a secondary school teacher who was in the process of adopting him, a jury has been told in a harrowing court case.

Details of the Tragic Case

Jamie Varley, 37, a teacher, and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, were adopting Preston Davey when the alleged abuse occurred. The baby was placed with the Blackpool couple in April 2023 at nine months old. Four months later, he was taken to an A&E department suffering from cardiac arrest and died despite medical efforts.

A postmortem revealed the cause of death as acute upper airways obstruction, likely from smothering with a hand or soft fabric, or insertion of an object into his mouth. Prosecutors argue this was not an accident but murder by Varley, who faces charges including murder and 25 other offences related to sexual and physical mistreatment.

Prosecution's Allegations

Peter Wright KC, prosecuting, described the case as "highly emotionally charged" and warned jurors to prepare for disturbing evidence. He stated that while the couple appeared in a stable relationship, they were "wholly unsuited to the role of adoptive parents", a fact tragically realized too late for Preston.

The jury heard that Preston sustained about 40 traumatic injuries, including 30 external bruises. Medical experts noted bruises on his thigh consistent with a slap and on his forehead from gripping. Wright emphasized that evidence shows Preston was sexually abused and physically assaulted in his final months.

Disturbing Evidence Presented

Jurors were shown images and videos from Varley's phone, depicting the abuse. One video showed the baby "slithering and sliding" unattended in a bath for 14 minutes while Varley recorded without intervention. The prosecution alleges Varley took multiple indecent photos and videos of the abuse.

McGowan-Fazakerley is charged with allowing the death of a child and four other offences, including child cruelty and sexual assault of a child. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Ongoing Trial and Legal Proceedings

The trial at Preston Crown Court continues, with the case highlighting severe failures in child protection. The prosecution urged jurors to consider the evidence carefully, noting the sinister pathology behind Preston's death, which they attribute to Varley's actions.

This case has sparked widespread concern over adoption safeguards and child welfare, as authorities investigate how such abuse could occur under the guise of a loving home. The community and legal experts await further developments as the trial progresses.
