An Independent MP has made a startling revelation about being forced to kill a dog with his bare hands to save a baby from being mauled.
Ayoub Khan, the Independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, shared the traumatic incident during the inaugural conference for the new left-wing political group Your Party in Liverpool.
The life-or-death decision
Khan explained that he faced an impossible choice when he encountered a dangerous situation involving a dog and an infant. "It was either a baby being mauled or restraining the dog," he told Politics Home during the conference held on November 29, 2025.
The MP emphasised that nobody intended to kill the animal, but the circumstances left him with no alternative. "Unfortunately, during the process, the dog lost its life," Khan stated, adding that his primary concern was protecting the vulnerable child from harm.
He further clarified his intentions, saying: "I didn't intend to kill anybody. But yeah... The dog died as a result of me trying to protect the baby."
Chaotic conference backdrop
The emotional disclosure came against a backdrop of turmoil for the newly formed political group. The Your Party conference in Liverpool quickly descended into chaos after co-founder Zarah Sultana announced she was boycotting the event.
The tension reached its peak on the first day of the conference at the ACC in Liverpool when members from a different socialist movement were blocked from attending. Khan commented on the dispute, stating: "I understand the reasoning behind that is, if you're affiliated to another political party, unless you revoke that membership and join another membership, it is one that makes common sense to me."
The new political outfit, which currently operates under the temporary name Your Party, was formed by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Sultana. However, the launch was marred by public disagreements between the top figures.
Party formation challenges
Khan has been instrumental in the formation of both the Independent Alliance and the new Your Party. The Independent Alliance consists of solo MPs, including Corbyn, who have joined forces outside traditional party structures.
The party faced additional setbacks when two members of the parliamentary group - Iqbal Mohamed and Adnan Hussain - stepped away from Your Party in the days leading up to the conference. Khan expressed his disappointment, noting he had a "fabulous relationship" with both members and hopes for their return.
"We've been working for the best part of over 16 months," Khan said. "We have a fabulous relationship, a very strong relationship. I'd like to see them come back and never say never, is my view."
Despite the rocky start, party members are set to debate an official name for the political group this weekend. The four options under consideration are: Your Party, Our Party, For the Many and Popular Alliance.
