Man Charged with Murdering Paedophile Ian Watkins Pleads Not Guilty

One of the men accused of murdering former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins has pleaded not guilty in court. The disgraced singer, aged 48, was serving a 35-year sentence after being convicted of 13 child sexual offences in 2013, including conspiring to rape an 11-month-old baby and multiple counts of sexual assault involving children.

Fatal Stabbing in Prison Cell

In October last year, Watkins was stabbed to death in his cell at HMP Wakefield, a high-security prison often nicknamed 'Monster Mansion'. Within days, Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, both inmates at the facility, were charged with his murder. The attack was described by a source as 'the most brutal way possible, even for prison standards', with Watkins targeted by another inmate who stabbed him in the neck. Guards responded quickly, but he could not be saved and was airlifted to hospital, leading to a lockdown at the prison.

Court Proceedings and Delays

Gedel had previously refused to attend court on two occasions, including earlier this month, when it was reported he was refusing to leave his cell but intended to eventually enter a not guilty plea. At a recent hearing, he formally denied killing Watkins. Prosecutor Tom Storey KC noted that Gedel's initial non-appearance was due to a refusal to attend via video link, as he wanted to be present in person. No bail applications were made, and both men remain in custody. Judge Guy Kearl, the Recorder of Leeds, has set a provisional trial date for May 5, expected to last two to three weeks.

Background of Ian Watkins' Crimes

Watkins' depravity came to light in September 2012 when police raided his Pontypridd home for drugs and seized his computer, mobile phones, and storage devices, uncovering his horrific crimes. During sentencing, Lord Justice Christopher Pitchford described him as 'a determined and committed paedophile', stating the offences were of such shocking depravity that a lengthy imprisonment was necessary. In 2014, his lawyers unsuccessfully appealed for a reduced sentence, arguing his guilty plea spared a jury from viewing his homemade child pornography, which included attempted rape of a baby and instructions to a fan to abuse her child.

Additional Charges and Police Statement

Dodsworth has previously denied possessing a makeshift knife at HMP Wakefield on the day Watkins was killed. In a statement after the death, police confirmed the charges, noting Gedel self-defines as any other Black background and Dodsworth as white British. This case highlights ongoing violence within the prison system and the grim legacy of Watkins' crimes, which shocked the nation and led to his lengthy incarceration before his untimely death.
