Man Sentenced to Life for Murdering Five-Month-Old Stepson in Brutal Attack

Thomas Morgan, a 29-year-old man, has been handed a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend's five-month-old son, Jensen-Lee Dougal, in what has been described as an 'extremely violent' assault. The tragic incident occurred at the family home in Swansea on March 30, 2024, while the infant's mother, Jordan Dougal, was at work.

Details of the Fatal Assault

Morgan shook Jensen-Lee violently after losing his temper following an argument with his ex-partner, Georgia Griffiths. Medical experts testified that the injuries sustained by the infant were among the worst they had ever encountered, including severe brain damage, multiple fractures, and extensive retinal bleeding in both eyes.

During the sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, Mrs Justice Stacey condemned Morgan's actions, stating that he had betrayed the trust placed in him by Jensen-Lee's mother. She emphasized that the violent shaking, though brief, was forceful enough to cause fatal internal head injuries.

Victim Impact and Emotional Testimony

In a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, Jordan Dougal, 24, expressed her overwhelming grief and trauma. She lamented never hearing her son say 'I love you' or call her 'Mammy,' and mourned the milestones he would never reach, such as taking his first steps or attending school.

Ms Dougal also revealed the additional pain caused by Morgan's callous behavior, including holding a gender reveal party with his new partner on the weekend marking the anniversary of Jensen-Lee's death. She accused Morgan of showing no genuine remorse for the lifelong devastation inflicted on her family.

Prosecution's Case and Trial Outcome

Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC argued that Morgan 'seriously abused the trust placed in him' and was in a state of rage after the dispute with Ms Griffiths, making him unfit to care for the infant alone. While at work, Ms Dougal received a call from Morgan claiming the baby was choking and had stopped breathing.

Jensen-Lee was rushed to the hospital but was found to have a devastating brain injury and was removed from life support the following day. Morgan denied causing the injuries, claiming he tried to save the baby after he fell ill, but was found guilty of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial.

Mrs Justice Stacey sentenced Morgan to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years, highlighting the severity of the crime and the profound loss suffered by Jensen-Lee's family.
