A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a grandfather who was punched outside a village pub in Leicestershire.
Court Appearance Following Tragic Death
Nathan Gothard, aged 36, from Appleby Magna, appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Monday 29 December 2025. He stands accused of murdering 66-year-old David Darke.
The incident occurred near The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, North West Leicestershire, on the evening of Sunday 21 December. Police were called to the scene at approximately 9.45pm.
Details of the Fatal Assault
According to Leicestershire Police, the victim, Mr Darke, was outside the pub when he was punched. The blow caused a serious head injury. He was taken to hospital but sadly died on Saturday 27 December, six days after the assault.
Officers arrested a suspect at the scene. Following Mr Darke's death, the investigation was upgraded and Nathan Gothard was formally charged with murder.
Family Pays Tribute to "Devoted Family Man"
In a heartfelt statement released on Sunday, the family of David Darke paid tribute to a beloved figure. They described him as a "deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys."
"He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend. Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls," the family said.
They remembered him as a strong, active, intelligent, and kind person who was "a friend to all." He was noted for his devotion to family and his passion for life, the outdoors, nature, and walking.
"His life was tragically cut short and he's now reunited with his loving, caring parents," the statement continued. "He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."
The case continues as legal proceedings develop following the initial court hearing.
