Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, has declared his intention to run for the United States House of Representatives in a significant political development.
A New Political Chapter Begins
The 31-year-old Harvard and Harvard Law School graduate announced his congressional bid on Tuesday, seeking to represent New York's 12th District. Schlossberg confirmed he will run for the seat currently held by veteran Democrat Jerry Nadler, who revealed in September that he won't seek re-election next year after serving 17 terms in Congress.
In a campaign video shared across his social media platforms, Schlossberg articulated his vision for the district. "This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington," he stated.
Building a Digital Following and Political Identity
Schlossberg has cultivated a substantial social media presence through regular commentary on national issues. His online engagement includes criticism of his mother's cousin, Robert F Kennedy Jr, whom he targeted in an Instagram post last month.
The post featured a Halloween costume concept mocking Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" message, which Schlossberg described as including "such things as measles." This demonstrates his willingness to engage in contemporary political debates while distancing himself from certain family political legacies.
The Changing Political Landscape
Jerry Nadler's decision to step down after nearly three decades in Congress signals a significant shift in New York's political representation. Nadler suggested to the New York Times that "a younger Democratic lawmaker in his seat can maybe do better, can maybe help us more," effectively endorsing the concept of generational change that Schlossberg represents.
The 12th Congressional District encompasses several prominent Manhattan neighbourhoods including the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and midtown areas. Schlossberg's campaign will officially launch on Wednesday, according to an email sent to supporters following his initial announcement.
