Five Italian teenagers on an educational trip to Thailand were fined by police after a viral video showed them mocking a Thai woman on a BTS skytrain. The incident, which occurred on July 23, prompted the Italian Embassy in Bangkok to issue a formal apology to the Thai public.
Embassy Issues Stern Condemnation
The embassy released a statement expressing deep regret and strongly condemning the inappropriate behaviour of the group, who were accompanied by a chaperone. The statement read: "The embassy extends its sincere apologies to the people of Thailand and to everyone affected by this incident." It emphasised that the students' actions did not reflect Italian values or the mutual respect between Italy and Thailand.
The Viral Encounter
The video shows the Thai woman, known as Sugus, asking the students to lower their voices. One student sarcastically replied, "Sorry for bringing money to your country," to which Sugus responded that they had "no manners." The students laughed and made obscene gestures, escalating the conflict. Sugus eventually reported the incident to the Samre police station.
Fines and Charges
After over an hour of negotiations, an amicable settlement was reached. Four students were charged with public insult and fined 1,000 baht (£22.34) each. A fifth student, who made an obscene hand gesture, was charged with both public insult and committing an act considered offensive in public, and fined 2,000 baht (£44.67).
Students Express Remorse
Following the settlement, the students apologised. One student representative said: "I perfectly know that money can't buy respect, and I'm really sorry for all the people offended and for having offended Thai culture." Another added that their behaviour was "wrong" and expressed regret to all Thai people. The students are set to undergo further lessons on cultural respect.
Victim's Call for Cultural Respect
Sugus accepted the apologies and expressed hope that future visitors to Thailand will respect local customs. "I filed the complaint to protect my rights and to ensure that no one violates them," she said. "I know the other side sincerely regrets what happened and accepts responsibility. They deserve a break."
Broader Implications
The incident has sparked discussions about tourist behaviour and cultural sensitivity. The Italian Embassy's swift action underscores the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations and mutual respect between nations.
