Police Extend Custody for Derby Car Attack Suspect
Derbyshire Police have been granted additional time to question a 36-year-old man arrested in connection with a vehicle attack on pedestrians in Derby city centre. The suspect, who remains in custody, was apprehended on suspicion of multiple serious offences following the incident on Saturday evening.
Details of the Incident and Investigation
The attack occurred at approximately 9:30 PM in Friar Gate, where a black Suzuki Swift struck seven pedestrians. The victims, comprising four men and three women aged between 36 and 52, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Three individuals have since been discharged from hospital, while others continue to receive medical treatment.
Police arrested the suspect just seven minutes after the incident in Station Approach, near Pride Park stadium. Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred, Derby's police lead, confirmed that authorities believe this to be an isolated event with no ongoing threat to public safety. "He was safely stopped in Station Approach, where the bridge crosses over towards Pride Park," she stated on Sunday.
Charges and Ongoing Inquiry
The suspect faces allegations including:
- Attempted murder
- Causing serious injury through dangerous driving
- Inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent
- Dangerous driving
Counter-terrorism officers have joined the investigation, which police emphasize is standard procedure for incidents of this nature and does not indicate terrorism is suspected. Detectives continue to examine potential motives and are appealing to the public for any footage of the event.
The suspect, originally from India, has resided in the UK for several years and lives locally in Derby. Forensic teams conducted extensive examinations at the scene, where personal items including shoes and blankets were recovered.
