Poultry Butcher Receives Life Sentence for Gruesome Murder and Burial of Girlfriend

A poultry butcher who murdered her girlfriend, cut the body in half, and buried the remains in a garden has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. Anna Podedworna, 40, was convicted at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday after a three-week trial for the 2010 killing of Izabela Zablocka.

Horrific Details of the Crime Emerge in Court

Podedworna, described as a skilled butcher, murdered Ms. Zablocka and used electrical tape to bind her body like a chicken before wrapping it in bin bags. She then buried the corpse in what prosecutors called a filthy, makeshift grave beneath concrete hardstanding in the garden of their terraced home in Normanton, Derby.

The remains were discovered by police officers in June last year, more than fifteen years after the killing. Both women were originally from Poland and had moved to the UK together in 2009, living in Normanton.

Defense Claims and Gruesome Disposal

During the trial, Podedworna claimed she acted in self-defense, alleging that Ms. Zablocka tried to strangle her during an argument at their home. She stated she hit her partner over the head in response.

However, jurors heard that instead of calling emergency services, Podedworna took two weeks off work to complete what was described as the gruesome and time-consuming task of disposing of the body. This involved dismembering it and burying the parts in the garden.

Family's Heartbreak and Long Search for Answers

Ms. Zablocka's family was left devastated by her sudden disappearance in August 2010, with no contact from her after that date. Podedworna denied knowing her whereabouts at the time.

In a poignant statement, Katarzyna Zablocka, Ms. Zablocka's daughter who was growing up in Poland when her mother moved to the UK, said she had spent her entire adult life looking for answers about the disappearance. The discovery of the remains and subsequent trial finally provided closure, though the pain of loss remains.

Conviction and Sentencing

Podedworna was convicted on multiple charges, including murder, preventing a lawful burial, and perverting the course of justice. On Wednesday, she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years before parole consideration.

The case highlights severe issues of domestic violence and the lengths to which individuals may go to conceal crimes. The court emphasized the premeditated nature of the disposal, which compounded the brutality of the murder.
