A Garden with a Fascinating History

In 1613, an enormous 42-mile aqueduct called the New River transported clean water from Hertford to London. While the river still exists and provides water today, the southern end, where the rock garden now sits, was covered over and abandoned in the 1890s.
After the council purchased the land in 1913, it was transformed into a public amenity. Today, Astey's Row Rock Garden is a long, narrow pathway enclosed by gates, enveloped in shrubbery and lush foliage.
