A man experienced instant karma after being caught on CCTV fly-tipping – only to have the rubbish re-dumped on his own front doorstep.
Caught in the act
Dean Gauci, 38, was attending to a block of flats he manages in Cardiff on Friday when he discovered seven bags filled with household waste. Determined to find the perpetrator, the Airbnb maintenance worker reviewed hours of CCTV footage and spotted the culprit at 9am on Friday.
He then spoke to neighbours, who quickly identified the litterer, who lived on the same street where the waste was abandoned.
A taste of his own medicine
Dean marched to the man's front door and placed the rubbish on his doorstep before ringing the doorbell. When the man opened the door and was told he had been caught on CCTV, he simply replied: 'I was going to move this, sorry mate.'
Dean, who runs Stay Care Operations Ltd., said: 'People fly-tip here all the time – this is probably the 30th or 40th time people have done it. So I was so determined to find the person who did it. I could have taken that rubbish and charged the landlord to dispose of it, but I wanted to do the right thing and catch the guy.'
He added: 'Before I saw the CCTV, I even went through the bags looking for any address I could – and found Amazon boxes with the addresses peeled off them!'
Neighbourhood justice
Dean spoke to three neighbours to identify the culprit, and one pointed out they knew the man. 'It turns out he lived 10 houses up from the property! He literally lived on the same street,' Dean said.
He then filmed himself leaving the dumped rubbish outside the culprit's front door before knocking. 'I piled it right up on his doorstep to give him a taste of his own medicine. His response was funny; he must have felt stupid! But he dumped it,' Dean added.
