Twin Quakes Devastate Venezuela: 7.5 and 7.2 Magnitude

Two powerful earthquakes, a magnitude 7.5 and a magnitude 7.2, struck within minutes of each other in Venezuela on Thursday, causing buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) predicted high casualties and extensive damage, noting that the disaster is likely widespread.

Details of the Quakes

The first quake, magnitude 7.2, struck at 2204 GMT with an epicentre 21km (13 miles) west of the coastal town of Moron, according to the USGS. Within a minute, a magnitude 7.5 quake hit about 45km away. The USGS stated that 'high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread.'

Government Response

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a state of emergency on state TV, urging the population to remain calm and united. She reported that the country's main airport had been closed after suffering severe damage and that the metro and train systems had been halted. Rodríguez also called on doctors, nurses, and other health workers to report to their work stations amid fears of a large number of casualties.

Fatalities and Affected Regions

The mayor of the Chacao district confirmed that the earthquakes have caused fatalities. The five worst-affected regions besides Caracas are the states of Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo, and Falcón, Rodríguez said. Many Venezuelans were at home when the quakes struck because it was a public holiday.

Rescue Efforts and Aftershocks

Rescue efforts continued through the night, with the quakes occurring at 1804 local time. The interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, noted that the quake could be felt in several states, with the Altamira neighbourhood in Caracas experiencing 'alarming situations' including collapsed homes and buildings. Rodríguez reported that Venezuela has been rattled by more than 20 aftershocks following the massive double quake.

International Assistance

The US State Department announced on X that it is mobilising assistance, including search and rescue teams and other resources, to support Venezuela in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes.
