R Kelly, the R&B singer serving a 31-year prison sentence for racketeering, sex trafficking, and producing child abuse images, has formally appealed to President Donald Trump for a commutation of his sentence. The request was filed with the Department of Justice and made public in court records this week by the office of the pardon attorney, which reviews executive clemency petitions for the White House.
Details of the Sentence
Kelly, 59, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was found guilty in 2021 of leading a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for illegal sexual activity and pornography. He received a 30-year prison sentence. In 2022, he was convicted on three counts of child abuse images and three counts of child enticement, receiving an additional 20-year sentence, which runs nearly concurrently except for one extra year. He is currently incarcerated at a federal prison in North Carolina and is not eligible for release until January 2046.
Lobbying Efforts
Kelly's lawyer, Beau Brindley, has been publicly lobbying Trump for more than a year. The commutation request, listed as “pending,” is not a full pardon. In 2025, Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly's immediate release to home detention, alleging that the singer's life was in danger due to a plot by three prison officials to have a terminally ill inmate kill him in exchange for early release. Brindley stated, “The only thing that can protect Mr Kelly behind the prison walls now is the fact that now the world is watching. And we will call on the courts and President Trump to help put an end to the corruption that now threatens Mr Kelly’s life.” The motion was denied.
Ongoing Denials
Kelly has repeatedly denied all allegations against him. The commutation request comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of his case.
