A 46-year-old Australian man has been arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok, Thailand, in connection with the alleged murder of a 17-year-old Thai girl whose naked body was discovered in a suitcase. The arrest occurred on Friday evening as the man prepared to board a Jetstar flight to Perth, according to local police and media reports.
Arrest and initial details
The suspect was detained at approximately 9:30 PM local time by Thai immigration officers. Images from the airport show the man being taken into custody. Police in Pattaya, a resort city on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast, issued a statement on social media confirming the arrest after investigating the man's alleged link to the teenager. The body had been found in a suitcase behind the Floating Market in Pattaya.
The suspect denies any involvement in the abduction and murder. A police official in Pattaya, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse that the man was interrogated and taken into custody. Investigators are awaiting the results of a postmortem examination and other evidence before filing formal charges.
Potential charges and evidence
The charges under consideration include child abduction, murder, hiding a corpse, and "abduction of a minor for sexual purposes," the official said. Police allege that CCTV footage shows the suspect entering an apartment in Pattaya in the early hours of Thursday alongside the 17-year-old girl. He reportedly emerged several hours later carrying a large black suitcase, which he transported on the back of a motorbike.
Police discovered the suitcase on Friday near a railway track, with the victim's body inside bearing signs of violence, according to local website the Pattaya News. Additional CCTV footage, shared by Pattaya 24 News, shows the girl holding hands with a man of Caucasian appearance while waiting for an elevator at around 3:30 AM on Thursday. Another clip shows the man taking the suitcase out of the building.
Investigation and consular assistance
Pattaya city police station requested a watch notice at the airport to prevent the man from leaving Thailand. After questioning, the suspect provided information about where the suitcase had been discarded, leading officers to find the body. The Nation Thailand reported that police arrested the man on charges related to murder and concealment of a body.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the detained Australian. A spokesperson stated, "Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment."
