Party Animals, the popular physics-based party game, is facing a full-blown revolt from its community after announcing an AI video contest. The backlash has been swift and severe, with fans review bombing the game on Steam and expressing anger on social media. The controversy highlights growing tensions around generative AI in the gaming industry.
What Happened?
On May 13, 2026, the official Party Animals X account announced an AI video contest, encouraging fans to submit AI-generated videos for a chance to win a share of $75,000 (about £55,500). The post stated: 'A short film you’ve been dreaming of making, a story that breaks all the rules, a character tribute to your favourite beast… In the past, ideas like these could only exist in your head. Now, with AI, they finally have a chance to become reality.' The rules require entries to be primarily made with AI tools, but there is no mention that submissions must be based on Party Animals. Notably, the rules also state that plagiarism is not tolerated, despite AI-generated content often being criticized for using unoriginal material.
Fan Outrage
The response has been overwhelmingly negative. Top X posts include RubberRoss saying, 'Just a hunch here. But you know how all the artists and creative on your team no doubt told you this was a terrible idea. It is. Fire the dumb ass that pushed for this. He might’ve tanked this games reputation.' Another user, Starjumpersix, wrote: '2.6 million views, 454 likes, and 2,050 quotes with a probably large chunk bringing attention to your poor choice and either uninstalling your game, cancelling their plans to buy it, or otherwise vote with their wallets. (Like I am. Y’all ain’t getting a single red cent from me.)' Anura Litho added: 'Congrats, this could have been a proper art contest that got you more good will, attention, and maybe even more revenue, but now you got the opposite.' Even the official hashtag #PartyAnimalsAIVideoContest has minimal activity, mostly filled with angry reactions.
The anger has spilled over to Steam, where over 1,000 negative reviews have been posted since the announcement, reversing years of mostly positive feedback. Bepis, with over 38 hours of playtime, said: 'Literally cannot believe the stupidity in hosting an AI art contest.' CowBells, with over 59 hours, wrote: 'You could’ve shut your mouth, cooked, and made as much money as you ever needed. It was perfect. But, no, you just had to blow it up. You and your pride and your ego!' RukiHyena, with over 104 hours, stated: 'Their AI video contest announcement is beyond disappointing, destroying a beloved game’s reputation, if they don’t backpedal there is no future for this game.'
Context: AI in Gaming
Generative AI has been a contentious topic in the gaming industry. While some games like Arc Raiders have used AI voicework without major backlash, others like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Crimson Desert faced criticism and removed AI artwork they claimed was included by mistake. Party Animals, released in 2023 for Xbox and PC and later on PS5, had built a positive reputation with nominations for Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards 2023 and BAFTA Games Awards 2024. This contest threatens that goodwill.
At the time of writing, neither the Party Animals account nor developer Recreate Games has responded to the backlash. It remains to be seen if player numbers will drop significantly, but the community's reaction suggests the contest may be a one-time misstep.
