Labor Senator Helen Polley has deleted a social media video that mistakenly included an explicit rap song over a carousel of photos from Anzac Day commemorations. The video, posted on her smaller Instagram page, featured images of a marching band, people laying wreaths, and ex-serving members giving speeches, set to the track "A$$ N Da Aurr" by American rapper Chingy.
The long-serving Tasmanian senator, known for her colorful social media presence, also posts videos of herself cooking on a George Foreman grill in her parliamentary office. The Anzac Day post was intended to pay respect to Australia's defence forces, but the inclusion of the explicit song drew criticism from followers.
Guardian Australia approached Polley's office and the prime minister's office for comment, and the video was deleted shortly after. A spokesperson for Polley stated that she has spent her life honoring those who served, including her father, a World War Two veteran. The video attracted about a dozen comments, with users questioning the choice of music.
Polley has held her Senate seat since 2004 and is known for her lighthearted cooking videos featuring her Foreman grill, which she calls "George." In 2024, she also sparked a minor political meme by accidentally referring to a colleague as "Mr Ravioli."
