European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's calls for a ceasefire as "very cynical" and dismissed the suggestion of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a mediator on Ukraine.
Kallas on Putin's Ceasefire Calls
Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Kallas said Putin's ceasefire proposals were aimed at "protecting his parade" while Russian forces continued to attack civilians in Ukraine. She described the calls as "very cynical" and urged the international community to remain vigilant.
Rejection of Schröder as Mediator
Kallas also rejected the idea of Schröder acting as a mediator, noting that he has been a "high-level lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies." She argued that allowing Russia to appoint a negotiator on behalf of the EU would be unwise, as Schröder would effectively be "sitting on both sides of the table."
Warning on Russian Influence in Europe
The former Estonian prime minister warned that Russia is actively seeking to increase its influence in Europe. She pointed to examples such as Russian athletes competing in sports organizations "like nothing has happened" and Russia's presence at the Venice Biennale. "Clearly, our adversaries are not sleeping," Kallas said, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance against Russian operations.
