England have named three uncapped players – Emilio Gay, James Rew, and Sonny Baker – in a 15-man squad for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's starting on 4 June. Ollie Robinson also returns to the setup after a two-year absence.
New faces in the squad
Gay, a left-handed opener for Durham, has been in outstanding form this season, averaging 92 in the County Championship under the guidance of Marcus North, who has now been confirmed as England's new selector. Rew, a 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Somerset, has already scored 12 first-class centuries. Baker, a 22-year-old seamer from Hampshire, has taken 14 wickets at 26.21 this season.
England's selection panel, now including North, has placed greater emphasis on county performances following the Ashes. Gay and Rew are competing for the opening slot, with Ben Duckett retaining his place after rediscovering form at Nottinghamshire. Zak Crawley has been dropped after early-season struggles, while Ollie Pope misses out due to Jacob Bethell's emergence in Australia.
Bowling options
Robinson's return is notable given his previous fitness concerns, but his record of 76 wickets at 22 apiece is impressive. He and Gus Atkinson are likely to share new-ball duties, unless captain Ben Stokes changes his bowling role. Baker provides additional seam options, with Brydon Carse injured and Jofra Archer being given time to recalibrate after the IPL. Matthew Fisher retains his place, but Matthew Potts misses out.
The squad includes two spinners: Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed, offering variety. England's team director Rob Key praised the newcomers: 'Emilio, James, and Sonny have earned their opportunities through consistent performances and have impressed us in high-pressure situations.'
North's role
Marcus North, who leaves Durham after six years as director of cricket, will be part of the selection panel. Key highlighted North's 'knowledge of the domestic game and relationships built throughout county cricket.' North expressed enthusiasm for identifying and supporting players who can thrive at international level.
The 15-man squad for a home Test is unusually large, but gives Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum flexibility as they reset the side after the Ashes.
