The Irish presidential residence, Áras an Uachtaráin, is saying goodbye to its most furry resident as President Michael D. Higgins' beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, Misneach, enjoys his final days in the stately home before moving to Galway with his owner.
A Presidential Companion's Final Days
With President Higgins concluding his remarkable 14-year tenure on November 11, 2025, his constant companion Misneach has been soaking up the last moments of his unusual life as Ireland's First Dog. The president took to Instagram to share that Misneach and his canine friends—Rosie, Luna, Rollo, and Teddy—have been making the most of his final weeks at the official residence.
President Higgins, who first took office in 2011, has always been open about his affection for dogs. His presidential journey began with Shadow, followed by Síoda and Bród. Misneach, whose name fittingly means 'courage' in Irish, is the last of these companions and the sole survivor of the pack.
More Than Just an Ice-Breaker
Over the years, Misneach became something of a celebrity in his own right, often photographed accompanying his master during official duties. The handsome Bernese Mountain Dog has been known to greet, sniff, and even lick visiting business leaders and politicians from around the world.
President Higgins once remarked about his canine companions: 'The dogs are not merely ice-breakers, they're also a great source of wisdom.' This philosophy was evident throughout his presidency, with dogs playing a significant role in softening formal occasions.
Misneach achieved internet fame on several occasions, most memorably when he was captured on camera licking and nibbling his master's hands during an important presidential speech. His late brother, Bród, also made headlines when he met royalty including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince William, and Kate, and even barked at former US President Joe Biden.
A Proper Send-Off and New Beginnings
The presidential dog received a heartfelt farewell, with other Bernese Mountain Dogs lining up to say goodbye to both Higgins and Misneach as they departed Áras an Uachtaráin recently. According to reports, Misneach has already settled into his new home in Galway, where President Higgins will begin his post-presidential life.
Well-wishers expressed their affection for the presidential pet on social media. One wrote: 'Aw, we'll miss Misneach's beautiful face, but he's done the state some service and deserves a break.' Another commented: 'We'll miss you, Misneach. Please ask your mum and dad to keep posting photos of your adventures so we can still see you.'
As Ireland welcomes its new president, Catherine Connolly, the presidential residence will see a different kind of pet moving in. President Connolly reportedly has two cats that will accompany her to Áras an Uachtaráin, marking a new chapter for the historic home.
While Misneach won't be able to roam the expansive fields of the presidential estate anymore, he's certain to enjoy a well-deserved retirement in the west of Ireland with his devoted owner, having completed his unofficial duties with distinction.
