Suspected Brothel Forced to Close Following Vandalism Attacks
A property in Grove Way, Dagenham, believed to be operating as an illegal brothel, has been officially closed by the local authorities. Barking and Dagenham Council successfully obtained a Premises Closure Order from Barkingside Magistrates' Court, shutting down the address for a period of three months.
A Timeline of Distressing Criminal Damage
The closure comes after a series of alarming incidents that terrorised the neighbourhood. The trouble began on Tuesday 30 September, when black oil was thrown across the windows and doors of the property and nearby homes. This was not an isolated event. Further vandalism occurred when red paint was splashed across properties and vehicles in the area. The situation escalated on Saturday 18 October, with more paint thrown and windows of neighbouring homes being smashed.
These repeated acts of criminal damage caused significant fear and distress among local residents, prompting the council and police to take swift action.
Closure Order and Official Response
The three-month closure order, granted on Thursday 30 October, is now fully in effect. It legally prohibits the leaseholder, the tenant, and any other person from entering the property until 29 January 2026. The property, which had a Private Rented Property Licence and was let on a short-term rental agreement, is now off-limits.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, stated: "This closure sends a clear message that we will not tolerate properties being used for criminal activities. The repeated criminal damage incidents caused significant distress to residents, and we acted swiftly with the Police to put a stop to it."
He also issued a direct reminder to landlords, adding: "We urge landlords to take their responsibilities seriously and carry out proper checks when letting properties, especially on short-term agreements."
The council is using this case to highlight the importance of vigilance for all property owners. Landlords, particularly those offering short-term lets, are reminded of their duty to ensure their properties are not used for illegal purposes. Residents who suspect a property is being used as a brothel are encouraged to report their concerns directly to the Police or the council.
