Council Tax Increases Across London for 2026
Starting in April 2026, council tax bills are scheduled to increase for the vast majority of households throughout England. Most local authorities are planning to raise bills by the maximum allowable amount of 4.99 percent, which is the threshold that avoids triggering a mandatory referendum.
London Boroughs Implementing Maximum Hikes
In the capital, all but three London councils will be increasing payments for residents by the full 4.99 percent. This widespread rise reflects broader financial pressures facing local governments. However, residents in three specific boroughs will experience a more modest increase.
Wandsworth, Westminster, and Merton are the exceptions, each raising their council tax bills by only 2.0 percent. This lower rate provides some relief for households in these areas compared to the rest of London.
Special Permissions for Higher Increases Outside London
Beyond London, certain local authorities in England have received special government permission to exceed the standard 4.99 percent limit without requiring a referendum. North Somerset and Shropshire will both implement hikes of 8.99 percent, while Worcestershire County Council will increase bills by 8.98 percent.
Additionally, Trafford and Windsor & Maidenhead will be applying increases of 7.49 percent, with Warrington following closely at 7.48 percent. These higher rates highlight regional variations in council funding needs and approved budgetary measures.
