Green Party Wins Historic Majority in Lewisham Council Elections
Green Party Wins Historic Majority in Lewisham

The Green Party has achieved a historic outright majority in the London Borough of Lewisham, securing at least 28 of the 54 seats as results continue to be counted across the borough's 19 wards. This landmark victory effectively ends a 55-year period of Labour Party dominance, marking the first time since 1971 that any party other than Labour has controlled the council.

Key Local Wins

Several key local victories have driven this political shift. In the Deptford ward, Green candidates Hau-Yu Tam, Heather Farnworth, and Daniel Jenkins were all elected. Similarly, in Rushey Green, the party achieved a clean sweep with the election of Daniel Dream, Samantha Gardiner, and Claire Wills.

First Directly Elected Green Mayor

This comes as London saw its first directly elected Green mayor, Zoë Garbett, who won in the former Labour stronghold of Hackney. Hours later, former Labour councillor Liam Shrivastava became Lewisham's Green mayor.
