Former Gogglebox Star Josh Tapper Elected Labour Councillor in London
Ex-Gogglebox Star Josh Tapper Wins Labour Council Seat

Former Gogglebox star Josh Tapper has achieved a surprising career milestone by winning a seat as a Labour Councillor in the 2026 local elections. The 28-year-old, who first gained fame on Channel 4's hit show in 2013 alongside his sister Amy and their parents, has successfully transitioned from television personality to local politician.

From Sofa to Council Chamber

Josh was just 15 when Gogglebox debuted, becoming a staple of British television. While some cast members like Scarlett Moffatt pursued entertainment careers, Josh chose a different path. He left the show in 2017 to pursue an apprenticeship in the civil service, later volunteering at cancer care charities and food banks, and serving as a homeless charity trustee.

His political journey culminated in winning the Underhill ward seat in the London Borough of Barnet with 1,128 votes, alongside fellow Labour candidate Zahra Beg. His sister Amy celebrated on Instagram, calling him an official councillor and expressing her pride.

A Long Road to Victory

Josh's election success followed previous setbacks. In 2022, he missed a seat in Edgwarebury ward by just 43 votes. In 2024, he stood as Labour's candidate for Hertsmere in the general election but came second. Despite these losses, he remained determined, insisting that his youth and relative inexperience would not hinder him.

He previously worked as a campaign assistant for ex-Tory Prime Minister Theresa May but has since criticized the Conservatives, stating they have 'driven our country into the ground' and need a 'transformative Labour government.'

Commitment to Change

Josh has vowed to approach politics differently, promising to 'stand up for every constituent' regardless of their voting history. He has focused on improving the economy, increasing police presence, and addressing crime like antisocial behavior and burglaries. He also supports Labour's goals to revive the NHS, launch Great British Energy, and break down barriers to opportunity.

When he left Gogglebox, Channel 4 kept the door open for his return, but Josh has firmly moved on. In 2018, he told The Mirror that while he missed the show, his focus was on a more secure future in politics. He married his partner of nine years in 2025 and cited Rob Lowe's character in The West Wing as his inspiration for entering politics.

Family Support

Josh's family also left Gogglebox when he did, with Amy appearing on Celebs Go Dating the following year. Their mother Nikki explained in 2023 that changing circumstances made it impossible to continue filming, but she cherished the time they spent together as a family on the show.
