Cotswolds Village Parking Chaos: Celeb Pubs Drive Residents to Consider Moving
Cotswolds Village Parking Chaos: Celeb Pubs Drive Residents Away

Cotswolds Village Transformed into Parking Nightmare by Celebrity-Favorite Pubs

The picturesque Cotswolds village of Clanfield in Oxfordshire has become engulfed in a parking crisis, with residents reporting that streets are now "wall to wall cars" due to the overwhelming popularity of two neighboring gastro pubs. The Double Red Duke boutique hotel and restaurant, along with the Mason's Arms, have become magnets for celebrities and social media influencers, including Kate Moss and Jeremy Clarkson, but this fame has come at a steep cost for local villagers.

Residents Resort to Bollards and Consider Moving Away

Frustrated locals have taken extreme measures, placing cones and bollards outside their properties to deter visitors from parking illegally. Many residents express deep concern over the deteriorating situation, with some even contemplating abandoning the village altogether. Ann Roberts, a 67-year-old resident of 13 years, described the scene as "diabolical," noting that every weekend, neighbors are forced to deploy bollards to protect their driveways from being blocked.

One 87-year-old resident, who has lived in the area since 1969, shared a distressing encounter: "One thing that annoys me is them turning in my driveway. If you say anything, you just get a mouthful of abuse." This sentiment is echoed by others, including Victoria, a 36-year-old tech company manager who moved to the village last July. She highlighted safety risks, stating, "The other day I couldn't get out of my drive. People park on the war memorial. Weekends it just gets really dangerous with visitors coming in."

Impact on Property Values and Village Atmosphere

The parking chaos is not only a nuisance but also threatens local property values. A 50-year-old resident with a decade of experience in the village warned, "If you were to have your property on sale and if they were to view it on Mothering Sunday and all the busy weekends, they wouldn't even bother to try." This concern is widespread, with villagers fearing that the disrespectful parking behavior could devalue their homes and alter the tranquil atmosphere of Clanfield.

Another resident summarized the issue starkly: "This is a real problem - they leave their cars everywhere. If it's a Friday night or a Sunday, it's total chaos." The influx of vehicles has transformed the village from a quiet retreat into a congested hotspot, raising alarms about emergency vehicle access and overall safety.

Pub Popularity and Council Response

The Mason's Arms has received high praise from Times food critic Giles Coren, who called it "gorgeous" with "cooking out of the top drawer." Similarly, The Double Red Duke has been hailed as "one of the country's hippest new hotels and restaurants" in a 2021 Oxford Mail review. Both establishments, purchased by Country Creatures for £1.4 million in September 2023, blend traditional charm with modern appeal, attracting a mix of locals, tourists, and celebrities.

Despite their success, pub owners have faced criticism for the parking fallout. Country Creatures declined to comment on the situation, but Giles Horton, chair of the Clanfield Parish Council, acknowledged that the owners are "trying to be as cooperative as they can be." He added, "They do try and ask their punters to park in the right sort of places, but people are people - they'll park wherever they can."

In response to complaints, Oxfordshire County Council has dispatched enforcement officers to address the parking violations. However, residents feel that more proactive measures are needed to mitigate the ongoing chaos and preserve the village's quality of life.
