The Brent Liberal Democrats have announced a change in leadership following the local election results on May 8, which saw the party increase its representation on the council to 11 members. Cllr Anton Georgiou has been elected as the new leader, returning to a role he previously held until his resignation in late 2024.
Return of a Former Leader
Cllr Georgiou, who was re-elected in Alperton, was unanimously chosen by the party's councillors over the weekend. He takes over from Cllr Paul Lorber, who stepped down after leading the group. Georgiou had resigned as a councillor in 2024 due to personal reasons but returned to politics in this election.
Election Milestone
The Liberal Democrats described the results as a milestone, with the party now holding 11 seats on Brent Council. The ruling Labour group lost 17 councillors, losing overall control but remaining the largest party. The Greens secured nine seats, while the Conservatives also won 11, making the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives tied in council numbers. It remains unclear which party will form the official opposition.
With increased representation, the Liberal Democrats will have more influence on council committees, including planning and licensing decisions, and will be able to question outcomes at scrutiny meetings.
New Leadership Vision
Cllr Georgiou said the new team of Liberal Democrat councillors is dedicated to being real champions for their communities. He paid tribute to outgoing leader Cllr Lorber, calling him a mentor and friend for over a decade, and praised his commitment to holding Brent Council to account.
Outgoing leader Cllr Lorber, who retained his Sudbury seat comfortably, said the party played a key role in Labour losing control of the authority. He expressed pride in his contribution and confidence in Georgiou to lead a group that will challenge the council to deliver more for residents.
