Hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers have lost their lives along the central Mediterranean route this year, with a recent tragedy underscoring the perilous nature of these journeys. In a devastating incident, a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Libyan coast, resulting in 53 people reported dead or missing.
Details of the Capsizing and Rescue Efforts
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed on Monday that the boat overturned north of Zuwara, Libya, on Friday. According to survivor accounts, the vessel departed from Al-Zawiya, Libya, at approximately 11:00 pm on 5 February. After about six hours at sea, it began taking on water and subsequently capsized.
Survivors' Harrowing Accounts
Only two survivors, both Nigerian women, were rescued during a search and rescue operation conducted by Libyan authorities. The IOM provided emergency medical care to the women, who shared heartbreaking stories. One survivor reported losing her husband, while the other stated she had lost her two babies in the tragedy.
UN Agency's Response and Warnings
The Geneva-based IOM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, noting that this incident is part of a pattern of deadly events along the central Mediterranean route. The agency highlighted how trafficking and smuggling networks exploit migrants, profiting from dangerous crossings in unseaworthy boats and exposing individuals to severe abuse.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the IOM has called for enhanced international cooperation to dismantle these criminal networks. Additionally, the agency advocates for the establishment of safe and regular migration pathways to reduce risks and save lives, emphasising the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the humanitarian challenges in the region.
