A 40-year-old homeless man has been arrested and charged after a woman was allegedly raped in a North London park. The incident occurred in Byron Park, Harrow, on Friday, May 1. Police were called around 5pm the following day, Saturday, May 2, after the woman reported the attack.
Arrest and Charges
Anojan Ganesalingham, who is homeless, was arrested in Harrow on suspicion of rape. He was charged with two counts of rape on Monday, May 4. The alleged victim is now being supported by specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police.
Police Response
Detective Inspector Mitesh Mulji, of the Met’s North West Command Unit, said: “We are committed to tackling the scourge of sexual violence against women and girls. This was an isolated incident, but we are aware of the concern that it will cause in our local community. The woman who bravely reported this incident to us is being supported by specialist officers.”
In response to the incident, police have increased patrols in Byron Park and the surrounding area. Mulji urged anyone with concerns to speak to officers. The investigation is ongoing.
