The Green Party has secured a substantial number of seats on Southwark Council in the 2026 local elections, significantly reducing Labour's dominance. Prior to the election, Labour held 46 of the 63 seats on the South London borough council, but that number has now dropped dramatically.
Seats Up for Election
All 63 seats on Southwark Council were contested in the 2026 local elections, with each ward represented by either two or three councillors. The wards included Borough & Bankside, Camberwell Green, Champion Hill, Chaucer, Dulwich Hill, Dulwich Village, Dulwich Wood, Faraday, Goose Green, London Bridge & West Bermondsey, Newington, North Bermondsey, North Walworth, Nunhead & Queen's Road, Old Kent Road, Peckham, Peckham Rye, Rotherhithe, Rye Lane, South Bermondsey, St George's, St Giles, and Surrey Docks.
Historical Context
Labour's control of Southwark Council spanned two key periods: from the borough's creation in 1965 to 2002, and again from 2010 onwards. However, there was no overall control between 2002 and 2010, following an increase in Liberal Democrat councillors.
In the 2022 local election, Labour won 52 seats, while the Lib Dems secured 11, making them the largest opposition group. Since then, four councillors defected to the Greens, and three former Labour councillors now sit as independents.
Expert Analysis
Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics noted that Southwark is one of several boroughs that could shift to no overall control, though Labour would likely remain the largest party. He told the BBC: "Southwark is strongly Labour-controlled but there's a powerful Liberal Democrat presence in the north of the borough, which the Lib Dems will be hoping to push south a bit, whilst Greens will be hoping to win in the southern part of the borough from Labour."
Pollsters More in Common backed this analysis, suggesting Labour faces threats from both the Lib Dems and the Greens.
