Camden by-election candidates confirmed after Green councillor resignation
Camden by-election candidates confirmed after Green resignation

Camden by-election candidates have been confirmed after a Green Party councillor was forced to resign immediately following his election. Residents in Regent's Park will vote on July 9, 2026, to choose a new representative.

Background of the by-election

The by-election was triggered when Mohammed Abu Naser, elected as a Green Party councillor in May with 1,054 votes, could not take his seat. He was ineligible under Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972 because he worked as a teacher at a Camden maintained school, making him a council employee. The Green Party failed to spot the breach before nominating him.

Mr Naser was one of eight Green candidates in London who did not take up their seats, triggering by-elections in Hackney, Ealing, Lambeth and Lewisham. Camden Council confirmed the poll will cost £30,000.

Political context

Excluding Mr Naser, the Greens gained nine new councillors in May, and with one from the Camden People's Alliance, they replaced the Lib Dems as the main opposition. Regent's Park was a clean sweep for the Greens, unseating three Labour members: Nadia Shah, Heather Johnson and Nasim Ali. None are standing in July.

Candidates for the by-election

On June 15, Camden Council confirmed six candidates: Vladimir Chorniy (Conservative), Alice Brown (Green), Nanouche Umeadi (Labour), Henry Potts (Liberal Democrat), Mohammad Junayd Khan (Independent) and Beverley Janet Martin (Reform UK).

Several candidates have previous experience. Reform's Beverley Martin and Conservative Vladimir Chorniy ran in Regent's Park in May, finishing 9th and 11th respectively. Alice Brown was the Green nominee for Highgate but came fourth. Liberal Democrat Henry Potts also stood in Highgate, finishing 11th. Labour's Nanouche Umeadi hopes to reclaim a seat after losing in Kilburn.

The deadline to register to vote is 11:59pm on Tuesday, June 23. Postal vote applications must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, June 24. Applications for proxy votes or Voter Authority Certificates must be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, July 1.
