California Sheriff Seizes Over 650,000 Ballots in Contentious Election Probe
In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican candidate for governor, has seized more than 650,000 ballots from last year's election. The move comes as part of an investigation into allegations of unlawful ballot casting during the 2025 election that saw the passage of Proposition 50.
Investigation Focuses on Proposition 50 Vote Discrepancies
Sheriff Bianco announced the ballot seizure during a press conference at the US Capitol in Washington DC on May 15, 2024. He stated that his office is investigating claims that ballots were improperly cast in the election that resulted in Proposition 50's approval. This proposition redrew congressional districts in what critics describe as a gerrymandering effort to favor Democrats, responding to similar measures in Republican-led states like Texas.
"This investigation is simple: physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes recorded," Bianco declared. His investigators obtained the ballots after serving search warrants to the registrar of voters last month, and a Riverside superior court judge has appointed a special master to oversee the counting process.
State Officials Dismiss Allegations as Baseless
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, has strongly rejected the fraud allegations. "There is no indication, anywhere in the United States, of widespread voter fraud," Bonta stated, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Counts, recounts, hand counts, audits, and court cases all support this."
Bonta has characterized Bianco's actions as unprecedented and designed to undermine public trust in elections. Over the past two months, Bonta has sent multiple letters to Bianco's office asserting that his staff lacks the qualifications to conduct a proper recount. In one particularly pointed communication, Bonta wrote that the ballot seizure was "unacceptable" and "sets a dangerous precedent and will only sow distrust in our elections."
Discrepancy Claims and Political Context
The investigation stems from claims by the Riverside Election Integrity Team, a group of local residents who contend that a discrepancy of 45,896 votes exists between the final vote count and handwritten records of hand-counted ballots. However, according to the Riverside Record, the actual discrepancy between machine counts and the final count submitted to the state amounts to only 103 votes.
Bianco finds himself in a crowded California gubernatorial primary that includes more than half a dozen Democratic candidates. As one of the two most prominent Republicans in the race, his actions occur within California's unique top-two primary system, which places all candidates on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation and advances the two highest vote-getters to the November general election.
Background on Proposition 50 Controversy
California voters decisively passed the redistricting ballot initiative last year, championed by Governor Gavin Newsom. The measure emerged as a response to former President Donald Trump's attempts to create new conservative-leaning congressional districts in Republican states. California Republicans, supported by the Trump administration, challenged the proposition, but the US Supreme Court denied an emergency petition that sought to prevent the implementation of the new district maps.
This ballot seizure represents the latest chapter in ongoing national debates about election integrity and partisan redistricting efforts, with California serving as a key battleground in these contentious political discussions.
