Zelenskyy Accuses US of Pressuring Ukraine to Cede Donbas in Peace Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly stated that the United States is exerting significant pressure on Ukraine to swiftly conclude the four-year war by accepting a peace deal that would involve ceding the entire eastern region of Donbas to Russia. In a detailed interview with Reuters, Zelenskyy revealed that the US has linked its offer of security guarantees to this territorial concession, a move he described as deeply concerning for Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
US Strategy Shift Amid Middle East Conflicts
Zelenskyy explained that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran, has influenced US President Donald Trump's approach to the Ukraine war. "The Middle East definitely has an impact on President Trump, and I think on his next steps. President Trump, unfortunately, still chooses a strategy of putting more pressure on the Ukrainian side," Zelenskyy told Reuters. He emphasized that Ukraine views the eastern part of the country as integral to its national security and hopes the American side will recognize this critical aspect.
Allegations of Russian Blackmail and Intelligence Warfare
Further complicating the situation, Zelenskyy accused Russia of attempting to blackmail the US by offering to halt intelligence sharing with Iran if Washington ceases providing intelligence data to Ukraine. "I have reports from our intelligence services showing that Russia is doing this and saying: 'I will not pass on intelligence to Iran if America stops passing intelligence to Ukraine.' Isn't that blackmail? Absolutely," Zelenskyy asserted on Wednesday. He mentioned that Ukraine possesses "irrefutable" evidence of Russia continuing to supply intelligence to Iran, though he provided no specific details during the interview.
Escalating Military Actions and Drone Attacks
The war continues to intensify with recent drone attacks causing significant damage. A Ukrainian drone strike damaged an industrial area near one of Russia's largest oil refineries in Kirishi, according to Russian officials. Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that over 20 drones were shot down over the northern Leningrad region, though the exact extent of the damage remains unspecified. Reuters highlighted that at least 40% of Russia's oil export capacity has been halted due to these attacks, combined with a disputed pipeline incident and tanker seizures.
On the Ukrainian side, Russian attacks have resulted in civilian casualties. In Kharkiv, a woman died from injuries sustained in an attack, with nine others injured in strikes across two districts. Prosecutors also reported a man killed by a Russian drone in a border area. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia's Belgorod region killed two people, including an 18-year-old man on a motorcycle and a woman in her car, as confirmed by regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
International Involvement and Sanctions Enforcement
The conflict has drawn in participants from beyond Europe. Zimbabwe announced that 15 of its citizens were killed while fighting for Russia in Ukraine, with Information Minister Zhemu Soda condemning their recruitment as human trafficking facilitated through social media. In response to Russia's war efforts, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized more aggressive actions against Russian oil tankers, aiming to disrupt Moscow's shadow fleet used to bypass Western sanctions. "Starmer said he approved more aggressive action against the vessels because the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was likely 'rubbing his hands' at the sharp rise in oil prices driven by the US-Israel war against Iran," the report noted.
Diplomatic Moves and Regional Alliances
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a key ally of Putin, visited North Korea, where he was warmly received by leader Kim Jong-un. Lukashenko paid respects at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, laying a bouquet on behalf of Putin, symbolizing strengthened ties between these nations. Additionally, a Turkish crude oil tanker, the Altura, was hit by a drone in the Black Sea after leaving a Russian port, with reports indicating an explosion on the bridge and water entering the engine room, though all 27 crew members were safe.
As the war enters day 1,492, Zelenskyy's revelations underscore the complex geopolitical pressures facing Ukraine, with the US pushing for a quick resolution that may involve significant territorial losses, while military actions and international dynamics continue to evolve rapidly.
